Since 2010, we have been supporting World Land Trust in their efforts to preserve and restore wildlife habitats that are under imminent threat of destruction. We now contribute every month to their Buy an Acre programme, which funds the purchase and protection of threatened habitat.
We're doing our part to help the planet by using solar panels to create clean renewable energy. These panels are right here onsite, so they can directly power everything from our office to our data centre and generated around 36% of our electricity in 2025, and 38% so far in 2026. Our office and data centre run on 100% renewable electricity. Part of it is generated by our own onsite solar panels, and the rest comes from the grid on a certified renewable tariff, where every unit we use is matched by Renewable Energy Guarantee of Origin (REGO) certificates from UK renewable generation. Our ultimate aim is to produce more of our electricity onsite.
At Web Wiz, our priority is cutting CO2 emissions at the source. In 2025, our operations produced 7 tonnes of CO2 (calculated on a market-based basis, with grid electricity on a REGO-backed renewable tariff). We go further by offsetting twice that amount, 14 tonnes of CO2, through Carbon Footprint Ltd. [Carbon Offset Certificate 2026]
Our battery energy storage system lets us store excess energy generated by our solar panel array for use overnight when the sun goes down. Combined with smart metering, the batteries also enable us to store energy from the grid during periods of low carbon intensity and use it during peak demand times, further reducing our environmental impact.
Our data centre is located on the south coast of the UK, near Bournemouth. We make use of the cool climate by using outside air for cooling most of the year. In addition, we utilise the warm air produced by our servers to heat our offices during the winter season.
To minimise power consumption, our shared hosting and Hyper-V platform runs on highly efficient cloud edge servers based on the Intel Xeon-D System-on-a-Chip (SoC) platform. Each of these host servers uses less than 60 watts, most racks in our data hall draw around 500 watts, and all of our servers together, close to 200 physical and virtual servers including customer dedicated servers, run on less than 4 kW of power.
We've implemented server virtualisation to reduce our impact on the environment and improve our dependability. Across our shared hosting and Hyper-V platform, it has reduced our reliance on physical hardware by 90%, making us more efficient and sustainable while providing a better user experience.
Our shared web hosting services function on a pay-as-you-go basis, making it cost-effective for our clients as they only pay for the resources they use. This approach also promotes environmental sustainability by encouraging clients to remove any unused websites, mailboxes, databases and data which would otherwise remain active, consuming unnecessary resources.
Completed in May 2018 and located near to Bournemouth on the South Coast of the UK, our data centre is owned and operated by ourselves allowing us to build from the design stage to construction an ecological data centre. Read more about our green data centre.
